1000hPa temperatures is approximately 10m above sea level. Thickness values give an indication of how warm or cold the air is. Lower thickness values indicate colder air sectors (<=-12'c - 510dam, <=0'c - 528dam). Higher values indicate warmer air sectors (=>12'c - 546dam, =>25'c 564dam). Thickness values are one of the parameters sometimes used to help determine whether precipitation will fall as snow or rain. If the air is of a continental source, snow can fall with thickness values of about 530dam or lower. If the air is from a maritime source values of 522dam or lower may be required for snow.
